You can run both Nikon scanners, the Super Coolscan 5000 and the Super Coolscan 9000 as well, on Windows 10 – 64 Bit. Nikon doesn’t support this operation system. For that the installation of the scanners is a little bit tricky but easy to manage with the following instructions. Please note: you need admin rights to perform the installation.
You can use the current drivers that come with the scanner from Nikon. You can download the current drivers here as well.
Unpack the downloaded ZIP File. The ZIP file contains a file and a folder with the name “Nikon”. Copy this folder to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files” .
You need an INF file to install the drivers on Windows. The INF file delivered by Nikon doesn’t work anymore. For that we have altered the INF file so that it conforms to Windows 10 - 64 Bit. This file has the name "NksUSB_IEEE1394 LSI.INF" and is included in the ZIP file that can be downloaded under topic 1 above. Please copy this file preferable to C:\.
Originally Windows 10 doesn’t allow the installation of unsigned drivers. The Nikon drivers don’t have a signature. Therefore the Windows operation system has to be started in a mode that allows unsigned drivers to be installed. To do this, follow these steps:
-Select “Restart” from the power options menu of the Windows 10 Start Menu. Hold down the SHIFT key while you click “Restart”.
To install the drivers the scanner has to be connected and turned on. After that open the “Device Manager”:
The scanner should appear now without the yellow warning in the Device Manager. Close the Device Manager and restart the computer as a precaution.
Good luck with the newly installed drivers.
